It is with a mixture of excitement and a tinge of sadness that I must inform you of my decision to move on from my role with VALA. It is not a decision that I have taken lightly. I will be stepping down from the VALA leadership role early in the new year in order to take up my new position as VCAL Manager with the VCAA - a great responsibility which I am honoured to accept. My time with VALA has been one of challenge, change and growth and I am delighted that VALA is in very good shape and ready for its next chapter.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to the staff and members of the Committee of Management without whose support I would not have been able to lead the organisation. Thanks also go to the many VALA members who have contributed to the development of this unique organisation. I take with me some fantastic memories of conferences great and small, adventures on Safari, resources developed and many great conversations had in Committee meetings and with VALA members - all of which I feel very privileged to have enjoyed. I would like to wish everyone the very best for the season and in all your endeavours. I intend to stay in close contact with the Committee and look forward to a very exciting period ahead.

Research Publication - The Victoria Institute 'Putting The Jigsaw Together'
Flexible learning programs generate substantial benefits for individual young people as well as for their communities and broader Australian social and economic imperatives, according to this report. The research for Putting the Jigsaw Together focused on the provision of education for disadvantaged young people through flexible learning programs in Australia.
The overall goal of the project was to both assess and enhance the potential of flexible learning programs to contribute to marginalised young people's learning and wellbeing, as well as to national educational attainment and social inclusion goals.
ACER is developing the free and comprehensive Foundation Skills Assessment Tool (FSAT) for the Department of Industry. Trials of FSAT have now commenced. We have received many expressions of interest in participating in the FSAT trials, which will support us in ensuring that the final assessments will be valid, reliable and fair. However, we still need more participants and learners to undertake the trial assessments. And we have just released new skill areas including Listening and Learning and some Core Skill for Work. The trials will continue through the next few months and providers receive reports of their learner's performance.
