Western Heights College VCAL program has a strong focus on individualized student learning programs and integrated projects. Flexible delivery underpins the VCAL program as they believe this supports positive learning outcomes for our students.

Senior students have planned and set up an enterprise called “Create Twelve”. They have a shop on-site where they sell merchandise made by students in the VCAL program. Students are responsible for the planning, set-up and on-going operation of the shop.

All Intermediate VCAL students take part in the Multi-Industry School Based and Pre-Apprenticeship Support Project, followed by Structured Workplace Learning opportunities specific to the needs of each student. The program is outcome based and focuses on careers in the Geelong and Bellarine areas. These opportunities are resultant from their partnership with Victorian Group Training Company. The majority of the Senior VCAL students are SBAT’s, with employment opportunities spread across a variety of industries and placement days are customized to meet the needs of the employer and student.

Western Heights College has approximately 60 students enrolled in VCAL.

The feature event of this year’s Safari by the Sea is ‘From Surf to Sand – and back again’, celebrating the daring and ambitious learning journey of their 2018 VCAL students! To make a difference and expand their understanding of different communities and cultures they travelled to the remote NT community of Santa Teresa, 85 km south-east of Alice Springs to foster strong connections and collaborate with Aboriginal young people to deliver a community project that benefits the people of Santa Teresa. In return the students from Santa Teresa are visiting Lorne to experience the way of life from a Lorne teenage perspective and they will all be included in our guest list!

Integrated VCAL Projects

Lorne P-12 College has been a standout school in the delivery of VCAL, particularly in the area of integrated learning. Over the past 9 years, teams of VCAL students have engaged in a variety of projects incorporating business, community relationships, construction and media production. VCAL Coordinator Cherie Osta, recipient of the 2017 VCAA VCAL teacher of the year award and leader in the QA process in her region, is a VCAL legend. Under her passionate leadership Lorne P-12 College received two VCAL Achievements Awards for 2013 – the Senior Team Award and the Team Teaching Award as well as the VCAL partnership award in 2014.

Lorne’s VCAL philosophy? No idea is too big or too small, ‘it’s about following the students’ passions, talents and interests and developing a curriculum that not only meets the VCAL competencies, but unites the students as a team to leave a legacy within their school and community’.

9.10 – 12.20 (participants will split into groups and rotate through activities)
