Literacy for Great Citizens!
Friday May 14, 2021
Jared Bandara, Westall Secondary College
This workshop will help you create and design units that will guide our VCAL students to become well-rounded citizens. During this we will build on your skills to successfully engage students with meaningful reading and writing tasks, taking oracy as a starting point linked to real work issues and topics. All areas, reading, writing and oracy, will include specific skill building strategies which are aligned with all VCAL literacy outcomes. All topics will involve input from the participants so to get a wide range of ideas and lively discussions.
This workshop is ideally suited for educators of students with low literacy levels that are reluctant to put pen to paper as well as educators (of all VCAL strands and subject areas) who are not qualified English teachers. We will also look at common misconceptions that can be found in VCAL literacy class, learn how to design applied learning and creating hands on lessons for literacy, and how to pick a great text and how to design units around these texts. Come with questions, concerns or ideas to share and lets tackle them as a team!
