It is with great excitement that I step into the role of VALA CEO as Adam Whitbread moved into his new role of VCAL Manager at VCAA. Adam's contribution to VALA over the last 3 years has been invaluable as recognised by the VALA committee at the December 2014 meeting. Whilst Adam will be missed, he certainly won't be a stranger at VALA. In fact, this change creates an opportunity to strengthen and build on the VALA/VCAA relationship!
In order to get the right skill sets in the right role to take VALA into 2015 the committee has made the following appointments:
Adam Cooper - Strategic Partnership Project Manager (more information on this exciting new project to follow shortly)
Karen Dymke - Professional Learning Manager for all PD and conference development.
Don MacDowall - administration, for all things membership, conference registrations and 'behind the scenes' magic.
Helene Rooks - CEO

Industry, practitioners and researchers are invited to present at the 24th NVCER Conference 'No Frills';, 6-8 July 2015 in Sydney.
The NCVER seeks informative, relevant and thought-provoking presentations that showcase quality research based on sound evidence, a focus on findings and recommendations which can be applied to the wider VET sector.
The conference will highlight (but is not limited to) research across three themes: Youth, Pathways and Skills.
Flexible learning programs generate substantial benefits for individual young people as well as for their communities and broader Australian social and economic imperatives, according to this report. The research for 'Putting the Jigsaw Together' focused on the provision of education for disadvantaged young people through flexible learning programs in Australia. The overall goal of the project was to both assess and enhance the potential of flexible learning programs to contribute to marginalised young people's learning and wellbeing, as well as to national educational attainment and social inclusion goals.
VALA membership includes access to playmeo's ever-expanding online database of group games & activities specifically designed to equip teachers with outrageously fun and interactive group activities. Here's a free 60 minute program chock-full of simple, interactive, no-prop style activities which are perfect for any group.

Targeted at VET in Schools staff, VETnetwork Australia is running a series of professional learning events in March 2015 titled 'What's new in VET with a focus on LLN' which aims to develop a better understanding of Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) for Vocational Education and Training (VET) teachers and trainers. These dynamic events will feature presentations from David Tout, Senior Research Fellow and Manager, Vocational Adult, and Workplace Education, Australian Council for Education Research (ACER) and Ros Bauer, 2013 Excellence in Language, Literacy and Numeracy Practice Award, Australian Training Awards.
Tuesday, March 17th Camberwell
In order to engage most students successfully in mathematics and numeracy classes in the middle years and in the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL), mathematics teaching needs to move beyond the textbook, worksheets and 'chalk and talk' to offer an alternative approach and a chance for all students to succeed in and enjoy mathematics learning. The hands-on activities in this workshop will focus on the development and practice of core mathematics skills through a wide range of approaches such as games, whole-group and other cooperative group work, as well as on enjoyment and having fun with mathematics. The workshop will be run by Dave Tout.

National Close the Gap Day is being held on Thursday March 19th, 2015. Register now to receive a free resource pack from Oxfam Australia, aligned to VCAL Personal Development outcomes, to help your students learn about the gap in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians, and create and participate in community project events that are all about student-led action and community engagement.
ACER is developing the comprehensive Foundation Skills Assessment Tool (FSAT) for the Department of Industry. Trials of FSAT have now commenced, and we have also released new skill areas including Listening and Learning from the ACSF and skills from the new employability skills framework - the Core Skills for Work. The trials will continue until at least the end of Feb 2015. Providers receive reports of each learner's performance against the skill in the relevant framework. Suitable for your 2015 pre-training LLN assessment. There are also some free half-day workshops about the new CSfW and its assessment in FSAT are being planned for late February or early March. These sessions will enable you to become more familiar with both the CSfW and FSAT.
