Best practice in Applied Learning delivery.

David Gallagher - Casual Academic


This masterclass is suitable for both new and experienced applied learning educators or educators who wish to learn more about applied learning. The day will include:
  •  an overview of some of the theories that support applied learning 
  • application of how the theories translate into applied learning in the classroom 
  • a concise summary of the history of applied learning and its relevance to the current VM/VPC curriculum 
  • wide range of practical and hands on activities 
  • an understanding of the importance of community engagement in applied learning 
  • an opportunity to work in small groups to workshop either VM or VPC program, incorporating applied learning theories from the masterclass (time permitting)  

Print material summarizing the applied learning theories, with a list of additional reading, will be distributed on the day.

David Gallagher has been involved with secondary education for 50 years. During this time, he has been a class-room teacher, careers counsellor, Executive Officer for a local community partnership, manager for Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Schools with the Victorian Department of Education and Training and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Manager with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. He retired in 2014. David has a Master of Education (Applied Learning), a Graduate Diploma in Career Education and a Higher Diploma of Teaching - Secondary. During his career David has provided professional development activities for teachers in Victoria, interstate and internationally. He has also been a consultant for the Institute of Applied Technology in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where he provided advice and support to establish an applied learning certificate for UAE students. He has also provided advice to the Malaysian Government’s Department of Education on applied learning in senior secondary education. He currently lectures to undergraduate and master students in theories of applied learning, program design, assessment, teaching strategies for applied learning at two universities – Deakin and Latrobe Universities He has written articles on the VCAL, applied learning and student engagement which have been published in both state and international peer reviewed journals. He was an active participant (partner investigator) in a 3-year Australian Research Council grant –" Innovative partnerships for youth engagement in education and work". He has also undertaken research for the VCAA on integrated projects and the Geelong LLEN on best practice VCAL delivery. David’s contribution to education particularly in post compulsory education has been recognized with the following awards: • Department of Education and Training Curriculum Innovation Award • Inaugural VET in Schools Victorian State Training Award • Special Commendation at the ANTA Australian Training Awards • Australian College of Education Excellence in Education Award • Inducted as a ‘Legend’ in the St Patricks' College Ballarat, Old Collegians Association • VCAA VCAL Chair’s Award for outstanding contribution to VCAL
