Navigating Numeracy – strategies for implementing the Numeracy Study Design

    David Young - Heathmont College

    Masterclass outline:

This session is designed to cover some of the key aspects you’ll need when implementing the VCE VM Numeracy curriculum in your classroom:

    · what the Study Design requires us to do – including differentiating between the requirements of Units 1/2 and 3/4 (‘familiar vs unfamiliar’).

    · ways and means to engage learners with low confidence or ability in mathematics – including hands-on activities that map directly to the evidence you need to collect.

    · strategies for Unit planning that start with a ‘big idea’ – how to build an applied approach to teaching and assessing Numeracy Outcomes (focus on Units 2 and 4).

Across the day, we will be working collaboratively to understand common challenges and identify solutions that help you and your students to achieve success.

    Who should attend?

This masterclass is designed for new/early-career teachers in the Numeracy space who are looking for advice on interpreting the Numeracy Study Design, examples of hands-on practical activities that can be run in all classrooms, and strategies for collaboratively planning sequences of work.

    About your presenter:

David Young is a graduate of Deakin’s Master of Applied Teaching and Learning (MALT) and was awarded the Bank First Academic Excellence Award for the MALT in 2024. David is the current Acting Co-Head of Maths at Heathmont College and is the lead for VM Numeracy at the College, where he is responsible for designing and delivering initiatives across both Units 1/2 and 3/4. David is also involved in mentoring pre-service and graduate teachers in the area of mathematics. He has enormous passion for applied learning and aims to create learning experiences that are of genuine value for students both during and after their time at school.
